"Pets leave pawprints on your heart."
- Unknown
A pawprint is a footprint left by a mammal - animals with fur and paws. You can learn how to draw a dog paw print with the help of this cartoon drawing guide.
Pawprints can be left behind in many types of material, including mud, dust, and sand. Wet or muddy feet will leave prints on almost any surface - including the carpet!

Some people like to preserve their pet's paw print with a simple DIY craft. They press the paw into plaster or clay, leaving behind a pawprint that hardens into permanence.
Some artists allow animals to walk through paint, leaving colorful paw prints behind on canvas.
Pawprints are also a part of our popular culture. Pawprints adorn jewelry, clothing, school supplies, and more. Many pet owners display pawprint patterns on their cars, coffee mugs, and other items in order to identify themselves as proud parents of dogs and cats.
Scientists are also interested in pawprints. The fossilized prints of ancient animals tell us much about how they walked and lived.
Researchers can also use pawprints to track the presence of modern-day animals, too. Wolf paw prints, for example, are much larger than domestic dog pawprints; you may not see the secretive wolves, but you can find what they leave behind.
Sometimes, pawprints even make the news. For many decades, researchers in Tasmania, Australia have hoped to find evidence of the marsupial Tasmanian wolf, presumed extinct since 1936.
Occasionally, pawprints are found that make headlines as possible proof that this animal still prowls the island's mountains. So far, these results remain inconclusive.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Dog Paw Print
1. Use a long curved line to enclose the irregular shape of the dog's central paw pad. The shape should resemble a rounded triangle.
2. Draw the first of the toe pads by drawing an oval shape.
Did you know? Some people call the toe pads of a cat's paw "toe beans." Why? Because the tiny pads resemble jelly beans.
3. Use a curved line to enclose the irregular rounded shape of the second toe pad.
4. Use a curved line to enclose the irregular rounded shape of the third toe pad.
5. Draw an oval to form the final toe pad of the paw print.
6. Begin drawing the claws or toenails of the paw print. Use curved lines to draw a small triangle.
7. Draw another toenail, enclosing a small triangle.
8. Draw the third toenail using a triangle shape.
9. Draw the final toenail, a curved triangle shape.
Color your dog paw print cartoon. Pawprints are often depicted in brown or black. But be creative - you can even capture the paint-inspired colors of Lisa Frank style paw prints!
